Collagen is a type of protein made up from amino acids. Its fibre-like structure is used to make connective tissue and in a human body it is present in bones, joints, cartilage, tendons, muscles, blood vessels, teeth, eyes, skin and nails.
Although it is abundant in our bodies, collagen levels gradually decline with age - around 25 we lose the ability to rebuild quantitative and qualitative collagen; there are factors that may contribute to its faster decline, such as smoking, alcohol, shortage of sleep, excessive exposure to sunlight.
